Default Trying to Help a Friend

Ok, I'll start out with I know absolutely NOTHING about immigration or visa's, etc. So if I sound dumb about this I am.

I have a friend that visits from out of the US each year and she contacted me concerning a friend of hers here in Texas that was in a abusive relationship. He was threatening to kill her and her daughter so after we got the call I looked into battered women's shelters and the ins and outs of those. She would not do that because she was afraid she would go to jail and her daughter taken away.

In August of this year she would have been married to a citizen (I believe) for 2 years. Last year she found out she had cancer during a doctors visit a checkup for her pregnancy. While she was in the hospital with the cancer/chemo (she lost the baby) her visa expired. The brute she married is on parole and kept her terrified that her daughter would be taken and she would go to jail. We have since gone and met her and now moved her out of that situation, however we have NO idea what to do. Her visa is expired and of course he won't help her since she left him and she won't turn him in because she doesn't want him to go back to jail (don't get me started on my opinion of that).

We put her daughter in school but what options does she have? She said an attorney told her it would cost her $2000 to renew her visa??? Can she just leave the country? I need some serious advice regarding this. Is there somewhere she can get help? Right now she can't even work so we are having to support her until we can figure out what to do. From what I can understand she is willing to go back to Europe where she was before.

I have a friend from Asia that is now naturalized or whatever and she said since she is married she is legal she just can't do anything like work, etc.

Thank you in advance for all your help and sorry I'm so dumb about this. I've been doing reading but the more I read the more confused I am and to be quite honest it's all very overwhelming.

She will need to self-petition herself under the VAWA law(abused women/children). Petition I-360 on uscis.gov.
She needs to gather all information and documentation possible to support her case.
I would suggest you to get a lawyer;it would be really helpful.

    Good luck!
