    how do i go about getting a public defender? in cali?

    Generally, you show up for court, plead Not Guilty, and ask for one.

    Depending on your city, you may also contact the PD's office prior to your court date.

    i did that at my 1st court date..
    now i have to go to a pre preliminary hearing...
    do the same thing?
    will they give me more time if i do?
