My question involves a roommate in the State of: California
My brother has shared the apartment in question with the roommate for several years. He decided to move out and roommate also found somewhere else to go.
My brother moved all of his own belongings out over this past weekend and even went back to vacuum and clean.
However, the roommate has yet to remove his items.
They were both on the lease.
My brother has tried to contact the roommate to no avail as his calls go unanswered and unreturned.
My brother went to the landlord to see what he should do and the landlord did a walk-through with him to see what the other person left behind - it's a lot of good stuff so it was surprising that he didn't take it with him or make arrangements to get it.
The landlord made friendly (but strange) suggestions like,
"Oh maybe you can just get the stuff out for him?" and "So and so will move it for you guys and won't charge much!"
Huh?
This was strange because my brother had explained that he and the roommate do not talk anymore and he doesn't know where he is.
There was a very minimal security deposit ($100) so he isn't worried about that, just the idea that the landlord kept repeating that if the stuff isn't moved out she will have to charge another months rent.
The question: If my brother does just what he is supposed to do (clean and remove his items and turn in all keys) is there someway the landlord could hold him responsible for this other adult's irresponsibility?
Thank you very much in advance for any insight!
