"False" hits have been documented, sure, but I am not aware of any court that forbids a search based on a positive hit to start with?

I am not a 4th AM scholar though.
I'm just saying that in order to get a positive "hit" the officer (or whoever is directing the dog) needed to instruct the dog to search. Dogs generally don't automatically go into drug finding mode without instruction. In other words if a dog "hits" on your car, there might be grounds that the officer was turning his "walk" into a search for drugs.
