My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Wisconsin
I just received my state refund check and to my suprise there was $810 withheld for fees that the Wisconsin dept of corrections(DOC) said I owed them from 1996. These fees I guess were supervision fees. I don't recall all of the details of when I was on probration but I do remember paying my fees and court cost. When I contacted the DOC they told me that these were supervision fees that I owed for years 1994-1996. They told me I could try to contact my local office but chances are I wouldn't get any information because records are destroyed after 5 years. The DOC told me unless I have some receipts or if I was exempt from paying the supervision fees there is nothing I can do. I can't prove I was exempt because the local office destroyed my records and who has receipts after 13 years of being discharged. My question is is there anything that I can do? Is there a limitation on how long the DOC has to collect these supervision fees? They(DOC) did tell me they tryed to contact me in April of 2008, that is the first time they tried to contact me since my discharge. Please Help!!!
