Default SSI Only Income. Filing a Tax Return

Have been assisting my cousin with disabilities the past year....finally has been awarded SSI - is separated from her husband. She will need to file a tax return in order to be eligible for the $600 - do you just file "separate" and just state her SSI income? Thanks - we've had a crazy year and thank you for all your help! She does not have any type of documentation to show the 2008 SSI income live a W2...etc. This is for Pennsylvania

Default Rephrase: Eligible for Stimulus with SSI Only

Pennsylvania - Just posted the previous message - but from the IRS site, it sounds as if an individual is not eligible for the Stimulus ($600) if their only income is SSI. Can anyone confirm that? Thanks! Had received welfare benefit previously.

    You mean this?
Quote Quoting Special Economic Stimulus Payment Packages Go to Social Security, Veterans Recipients
To qualify for the minimum economic stimulus payment, people must have at least $3,000 in any combination of qualifying income from retirement, disability or survivors’ benefits from the Social Security Administration; disability compensation, disability pension or survivors’ benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs; Tier 1 benefits from Railroad Retirement, certain combat pay and earned income from wages, salaries, tips or net earnings from self-employment that are includible in taxable income.

IF you did NOT get a 2008 stimulus check, this may be the page you want to review.

Yes - when you go into the "next" sections":

    You are eligible if:

You or your family has at least $3,000 in qualifying income from, or in combination with, Social Security benefits, Veterans Affairs benefits, Railroad Retirement benefits and earned income. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) does not count as qualifying income for the stimulus payment. So I assume the SSI, as stated above, does not count. Thanks - just another confusing issue! Appreciate your expertise.

    You are welcome.

2008 is out, but maybe the 2009 stimulus is in order for a payout?
