My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: UK.
Ok so im in a sticky situation. I was renting a flat for a year and sharing with a close freind. This friend handled all the rental agreements etc. I never signed anything. Anyway we decided to stay there for another year round about June last year. A few months later (September, maybe October) I had to drop out of University and move away. I obviously informed my flat mate of this. To honour our agreement I paid all of the rent up until November, when I wrote a signed letter stating that I could no longer afford to pay for a place where I'm not living etc. I placed this letter in a pigeon hole marked 'Landlord' in the building where we were living. November, December, January and Febuary passed without me hearing anything. Then at the end of Febuary i hear from my friend (the roommate) and the landlord saying that the Landlord had not found the letter untill Febuary and therefore wants £750 (for December, January and Febuary's rent). He stated that if he didnt recieve this amount he would press charges against my flat mate (because the rental agreement is in his name).
Problem 1; I can't afford to pay that £750.
Problem 2; My close friend (and flat mate) studies law so if the landlord were to press charges that would be seriously bad news for him.
I'm wondering what on earth i can do here. Any help would be HUGELY aprreciated.
Thankyou in advance
