Accidental Shoplifting in Illinois

Please help my friend in Illinois..Last night my friend was at a dollar store. He bought some tooth paste n tooth brush and plastic container..He went out to vehicle put in trunk..He then went back in to by another plastic box cuz he was going on vacation. When he took it up there he gave cashier the box with lid on. Cashier asked if there was 2 n he replied no just one. He paid with credit card($1.00) went out n put his items n box n relized there were 2. He immeditely took other back in and gave it to cashier. He is just nervous because he accidentely walked out with extra one and he his hire up official and never intented to steal. Let me know if anything could happen.

He returned it immediately...and what happened?

If he wasn't detained, if no police were called, if all that happened was that the cashier took it back, he's fine.
