    Default Post Hysterectomy Bladder Issues

My question involves medical malpractice in the state of: TN

My wife recently had a vaginal hysterectomy and she has had bladder issues for weeks since the surgery. She had the surgery to eliminate the excessive bleeding she had for years and now she is bed ridden because of incontinence. She can't control her bladder and she is wearing adult diapers 24 hours a day. No one is taking this problem seriously in our area and none of the doctors seem to know what to do. Her quality of health is far worse than it was with the occasional excessive bleeding she experienced before, now she is incapable of leaving the house or returning to work and this is causing her much mental pain and suffering! Do we have a malpractice case and where can we get her help soon?

The only way to determine if you have a viable malpractice claim is to have her medical records thoroughly reviewed by someone who specializes in malpractice.

To find such a practitioner in your area, contact your State Bar Association.

While you're waiting for her case to be evaluated (should you decide to go that route).....

It is not that unusual to have some incontinence, especially stress incontinence, after a vaginal hysterectomy. A lot depends upon the proximity and position of the urinary bladder and uterus, as well as the diagnosis precipitating the decision for the hysterectomy. Have you thought about getting an evaluation/opinion from a urogynecologist? Ask your wife's GYN for a referral to one, or...if you're close to a major teaching hospital, give them a call to see if there's one on staff. Good luck.

We have seen a urologist and we are waiting to see a second next week. None of the medication that she has been given is having a positive affect on her condition. We are hoping to see someone at Vanderbilt in Nashville if we can get a referral.

    Thanks

try just calling them. Depending on the situation, a referral may not be necessary. Doesn't hurt to call.

I read your question yesterday and did a bit of research. I am not familiar with the specific situation but I could not find anyplace that placed incontinence high in the complications percentages. At least as a long term problem. Short term incontinence did not seem to be unusual. Of course, each patient is unique. Not saying the doc cause the problem but I do understand that the hysterectomy removes tissues that do lend in support of the bladder. As such, if your wife had a problem that the tissues removed essentially hid by lending support to the bladder, that would not be a malpractice situation. I also understand in those types of situations, there are repairs for the problem.

Of course, there is also the possibility the doc did cause the prob. To be able to know which it is, you will have to see a doctor that can diagnose the problem.

Hopefully your wife does find a solution. I understand the problem more than most others due to a surgery I had in the past. It is situation that is hard to deal with and accept. Best of luck to her.

Not just a urologist...a gynourologist (urogynecologist). They are sub-specialists in the fields of OB/Gyn and Urology. They are board certified and have additional training in evaluating/treating female pelvic organ conditions, including the muscles and connective tissue supporting them. That is why I suggested a major treaching facility, if you have one, in your area.

    Best of luck.
