Question How Does UI Work when You Go Overseas for Months in the Middle

My question involves unemployment benefits for the state of: California.

What happens to UI benefits when you go overseas for months after filing a claim?

    1) Do you tell EDD that you are going overseas?
    2) Do you continue to sign waivers because you have continued to look for work online or by phone (it is the internet age after all) and you can come back to U.S. as fast as the plane can fly to work? The eligibility section does not say that someone cannot be overseas.
    3) The benefit is supposed to be 1 year. You receive 3 months of it, then leave overseas for 3 month. Assuming it stopped when you left. When you come back, do you get an additional 9 months of benefits or 6 months?
    4) Should someone in this situation not file a claim at all until their oversea stay is over?

    Thanks for any help.

Default Re: How Does UI Work when You Go Overseas for Months in the Middle

If you're traveling for three months, you are not available for work during that time and are thus not eligible for unemployment benefits. I doubt that UI will believe that you are willing to hop on a plane home the second you get a job offer.

If you want to ensure your eligibility for unemployment benefits, stay home and look for a job. If you want to be a globetrotter, expect that your three month vacation will end your eligiblity for unemployment.
