Default Do I Really Need a Public Defender

I want to try to get into a diversion program for this shoplifting charge I've got so I can keep it off my record. Will a public defender help me do this if possible? When I go in for arraignment can't I just ask for a preliminary hearing, and then discuss my options personally? I don't see how having a defender would help.

Nobody here can promise that you'll do better, worse, or the same in terms of an outcome with or without a lawyer. What people can tell you is that you improve your chances of getting a more favorable outcome by using a lawyer.

A public defend can defitnely help increase your chances of getting in to a diversion program. Why refuse a cheap or free lawyer?A lot of times a Da won't speak to you directly, only thru a lawyer.
