Default Permanent Residency Granted But No Response in Time

I want to learn about possible courses of action for this issue my Girlfriend's family is going through.

Her father has been trying to get PR for his family for many years now. I just heard from her that their Immigration lawyer gave them some terrible news. Apparently her dad was granted Permanent Residency and approved a year ago when they sent out a letter. The lawyer apparently did not recieve this letter and did not know. Now, one year later, it has expired or something and he cannot do get it back.

Is there any way to argue to the courts that one letter was not reasonable notification? He has spent countless $ on this I'm sure and this is just crushing news to her family. Anyone have experience on a similar issue?

He should get a copy of his entire file, including the letter, from his lawyer, then consult a better immigration lawyer to try to find a solution. I can't speculate as to possible solutions based upon the few facts available.
