Default Can they press charges from student id?

    hi,
i was caught 3 months ago and have not received any correspondence or civil demand from store. (which is strange because i have read people caught for less than my amount have got civil demand in 3 weeks from Kmart)

There was no police involved, goods amounting $83 and i signed some forms.

I am an international student so did not have license or state id, but i had a school id of which they kept a photocopy.
It will be really helpful if someone could help me on following questions:

    1. Do you think they can press charges based on school id, without social security no. on it?

    2. will they try to find out my social security no by calling up my school? in that case will i come to know from my school that they called?

    3. should i call up the store and inquire what happened? Incase letter is lost and i have not received.

    I thank everyone in advance.

    Default Shoplifting Charge

If charges were authorized, they probably can successfully track you down through your student ID. But if the police haven't previously been involved, that's less and less likely to happen as time goes by.

If you gave them your correct address, then you should receive any civil demand they send. (But they don't have to send one.) The only way to know for sure if they sent one is to ask them; some would suggest finding out, while others would lean toward letting them follow up if they choose. It's ultimately a judgment call.

I agree that this is a judgment call.

Did you give them the correct address?

Was it a small store that you shoplifted in? Did they recover the items?

They may have decided not to press charges.

But if they do, no, they don't need your social security number to charge you.

    Thanks for youre responses,
it was Kmart in CA, and they recovered some clothes that i stolen in same condition as they were before.
I gave them correct address, but forgot to put apartment no. (buidling has 36 apartments), so next day i called up the LP at Kmart and gave him my apartment no., but he said he was away from his office so he will put the apartment number in the forms later. Now i dont know if he put the number down or not.

So if he did not put it down then the letter would get misplaced, and in that case i should call up the store again (which i am a bit scared to do)

when i dont know what happened on his side, i am confused about what should i do.
    Kindly reply,
    thanks.

Its been 3 months? I'd go to the court house where you were charged (what ever county it was) and get ahold of your records. Make sure you don't have a warrant out for your arrest. If it seems clean, your free I guess.

yeah go ahead and call the prosecutor's office. They should have a record if your charges were filed.

LA county superior court has online index for defendents and you can search on it by paying online. I just searched and my name is not there. I am just wondering if this index is for all the cases that are filed till date. I will have to call up on Monday to find this out.

thank you all for your responses, i hope i dont get the charges and i also wish luck to all of you who are going through similar mental state as me.
For me, it has been long but i still cant come out of the shock and the guilt. Want to start a normal life but somehow cant forgive myself. I am going to be living with my partner when he comes back from out of the country, and i dont know how to tell him about this, i think i have to be honest and i should be able to confront this fact. But dont know what will be the consequences. I really appreciate all those who have had courage to tell their parents or loved ones. Right now to me this forum seems like the only community where i can share this darkest episode of my life.
