Default Month Since Incident, With No Word

My question involves criminal law for the state of: nj
my friend shoplifted a month ago, alarm went off, and employees saw him drive off in his car
he hasnt heard any thing from police or recieved any summons and no warrants are out for him
If they saw his license plates , why isnt it being pursued

So if they had gotten the license plates, he would have recieved a call pretty quickly after the incident ?
What about the fact he is on probation ? Wouldnt they have called his PO ?
People on here keep saying that it can take months for charges to be pressed but i dont understand why...........

So they cant press charges just based on the fact that employees witnessed you running out of the store ? Even if they had gotten the license plates?
They need the whole thing on video...............
ANd the thing with the probation i wanted to know is, if police were contacted and and they saw that he was on probation, wouldnt they notify his PO

I would imagine they would definitely notify his probation officer. Also please note, and I am speaking from experience here, it is very possible that it could take weeks or months for any action to be taken. This could be for a variety of different reasons depending on the situation, but you should still be aware that it is very possible.

It is possible for the police to have some things on their hands (i.e. they put it off until later), but realistically; if a month has passed, and still no word from the cops, then the store has chosen to do nothing. If you need further proof of this, I have looked over these forums, and there are only two cases where someone was caught long after leaving, one the person was called within hours, the other in two weeks.

Also, we encourage you never to shoplift/never again, and get your friend to stop, or never go shopping with him again: all it takes is one accident to forever ruin your chances of a good job/college and ruin how people see you, though I suppose if you're posting here, you've already been at least slightly raddled by this.

And, as stated before, tell your friend never go back to that specific store, and if he absolutely must (i.e. lives are at stake), then do not steal; they will watch your friend like a hawk.

As a note, however, I have no significant background in law; I have read these forums, taken a high school law class, and used to be a fan of law and order.
