Default Accusation of Stealing and Forging Checks

at my job i was allowed to sign checks if the owner of the company wasnt around. i signed the checks for almost all our bils including payroll. now my x-boss is claiming that my paychecks were stolen and forged and although its true that he didnt signed some of them i have no proof i was allowed to sign any checks and my names not on the account as someone allowed to sign. i know im screwed with no defense or proof so what am I looking at? Theft, embezzlment, larceny, etc? ive never been in trouble before so is it possible i can avoid jail time? If not how long do u think i'll get? i worked for many years with him so if u add up all the paychecks i got its alot of money so this will be serious. thanks in advance for ur help/advice

    Default Accused of Stealing Checks

If these are payroll checks, and you were authorized to sign the checks, there will be payroll records to back up the payments. (Since you're not flat-out saying "I did it", I'm looking at ways you might be able to establish that you did not.)

Our payroll was done thru a outside payroll company but the checks came back to my office once they were cashed. If my boss destroys them what other way can I get proof?

If the checks go through an outside company, that company should be maintaining its own records. Also, the bank that issues the checks will maintain copies which can be ordered, usually for a number of years.
