My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: O'ahu,Hawaii
My boyfriend and his family had to move out of their house last year because it was going for foreclosure. So we found a house to rent. Then in early December, my bf had received a letter from the mortgage company saying that they are going to extend the years on the house to lower payments. The first payment would be due on the 1st of February. The landlord was notified right away and we needed to move back in the other house. We understand that there was a contract, but we cannot afford to pay rent plus a mortgage. She told us all she would like is the rent money for January and February. January was paid. We moved out completely on Feb. 7. She says she still wants us to pay February. We told her we would try but we don't have enough money to give her. Now she saying that we never paid January. We also found out that there are others living in that house, but she still asking us for money. We told her to just keep the deposit if she wants. What do you think? Does she still have the right to ask us for money eventhough others are occupying her property? Sorry it's so long. I didn't know how to cut it short.
