I was in so much trouble in Illinois several years ago because I went to a tax man who did a lot of bad things under the table. I was audited and all of that good stuff. Since that time, I make it my business to contact IRS about all things filing and 3 years ago while in their office, I was asked about my living situation. I explained that my twin granddaughters both had autism and my daughter who is 37yrs old and has never worked due to the 24hr care of both of them does not have any income in her name although the twins receive SSI because of the disability.
I was told this: all parties living under my roof(lease is in my name and I.m the only person working)were considered dependents based on the definition of one from IRS. Also all money except the kids SSI was in my name. Nobody has ever worked or filed taxes so I could claim them all and I have been doing so for over 4 years without any trouble. I file my taxes with IRS every year since I got in trouble many years ago. Hope this helps.
