    Default Joint Ownership of Stocks

My question involves personal finance in the State of: PA

i hope this is the right form. if a stock is listed as JNT TNT (TEN) between husband and wife....if one dies does that mean that the ownership of the stock automatically goes to the other spouse?

It can. There are several types of joint tenancy. Some include "rights of survivorship", others don't. You'll need to check out the account setup paperwork to determine which TYPE of joint tenancy the account was created under.

i show the listing on the actual stock certificate as:

joseph h smith and patricia m smith JT TEN

then i have another one that states

joseph h smith and patricia m smith TEN ENT

i am confused. i know that when purchased dad and mom purchased together.

what is the difference between the two listed? i assume JT TEN means joint ownership? what does TEN ENT mean?

TEN ENT is probably "tenancy by the entirety" - another of the "joint tenant" variations (The other type is "tenancy in common"). The difference is that a tenant by the entirety can't sell or give away his interest in the property without the consent of the other tenant. Upon the death of one of the spouses, the deceased spouse's interest in the property devolves to the surviving spouse, and not to other heirs of the deceased spouse. This is called the right of survivorship.

how do you go about placing a beneficiary on your stocks? for instance if someone owns stock and if they pass away, they want to make sure that it is going to the beneficiary. do i need to contact an agent or something?
