    Default Bigamy

My question involves divorce in the State of: TENNESSEE

I have found out that my marriage is not legal.... I got married about a year ago, and was never aware that my husband had been married 10 years ago in a different state.

When we applied for our marriage license, he said he had not been married before. Do they NOT run a background check or anything through vital statistics before granting a marriage license? I thought that was the whole purpose of giving your social security number and such?

My question is... what exactly happens during the process of getting a marriage license? Obviously I know what was going on our end (filling out the paperwork etc), but what was the court clerk doing (or supposed to be doing) on her end during the 20+ minutes that we were waiting? Im confused and frustrated with the lack of protection for this happening to someone else.

First, the threat of a felony charge is usually sufficient to keep people reasonably honest.

Second, feel free to call the police and turn your "husband" in.

Yes, there should be better checks. I just think you are mad at the wrong person.
