Default Civil Demand After Getting Caught Shoplifting at Target

I got caught shoplifting at target. They took me back to the room and took all my information down and everything. They didnt take my picture. They didnt call the cops. They told me that i was not allow at the store any more and that they wouldnt get the police involved if i cooroperated with them. I did and they sent me a letter in the mail saying the cops can come get us and how much we have to pay.

This is what the letter said:
We are contacting you regarding an incident that occurred at Target. The state law that authorizes a merchant to recover damages from an individual who has unlawfully taken marchandise from their store is enclosed with this letter. The amound of this demand is $268.82.

I didnt still that much it was under 20 dollars worth of stuff but ill never do it again. It was only 3 things. It was the worst mistake of my life. It was also my first offense and my last one. I'll NEVER do that again. I wish i could go back and take back what i did. Thats the last time ill ever do that.

So if you know anything that would help me out. Please reply. I want to know if ill go to jail and if ill have a crimnal record. If they will come and take me away from my home any time soon because of the letter we got in the mail. Let me know soon PLEASE. [/b]

    Default Shoplifting

It sounds like they didn't file charges, and have submitted to you a civil demand. Most states now allow stores to submit such demands for payment to shoplifters, with the amount they can charge defined by statute.

If no charges were filed, and you're not prosecuted, you won't have a criminal record from the incident.

You'll still have to go to court shorty, the civil demand is from the store. You won't go to jail unless you don't show for court.
