I recently moved out of an apartment due to personal issues. I gave more than a month's notice to my landlord and roommate and offered to take responsibility for finding someone to sublet or take over the remaining months on my lease. I had given myself a month, so I figured I could run an ad or between my roommate and I, we might hear of a friend or someone who might need a place in that time. My roommate declined and offered to take over and pay my portion. My landlord is returning my deposit to me, almost in full. Can I request a letter stating I am released from the lease or a copy of the lease with myself omitted? I understand that I signed a contract, but can I be held liable for rent in the coming months, if he (roommate) cannot pay the full amount? I just don't want to get a phone call on the first of the month, in the next couple of months, demanding my portion of rent with no prior notice, as I am paying rent somewhere else now. I'm not trying to screw anyone over...just don't want to get screwed over myself.
