My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Connecticut
Last week we received a letter from our landlady stating that she has received several complaints about us keeping a dog in our apartment. She says that our apartment complex does not allow dogs.
The issue is: WE DO NOT HAVE A DOG. We do have two cats, which are allowed per lease.
Our one year lease is running out in four months and I am afraid that our landlady is trying to compile a case (paper trail) against us in order to keep the security deposit.
She won't disclose who made the complaints, because she claims that she doesn't want to create animosity between us and other tenants.
When I called her to discuss the complaint she said that she believes me that we do not keep a dog in our unit. Yet, this does not give me any peace of mind. As for now it's just a word against word situation.
MY QUESTIONS:
1. Do I have the right to know who made the false complaint?
2. How can I handle this to protect myself and ensure I get my security deposit back? Should I start making a paper trail myself? If so, how?
Any input is greatly appreciated!
