Default How Long Will I Receive SSI for Dependent Children

Me and my kids are receiving SSI from my deceased husband. Both kids are minors. Was wondering how long should I as their mother will continue to receive this SSI benefit? What about my 2 minor kids?

We started getting this benefit year 2006. Will SS require me to come to their office for an interview and bring my tax returns and bank statements? I would like to get some insights and answers from people here who are receiving SSI like me - mother with minor kids who is also the "representative" for their kids.

What do they need from the bank statements? Will they question MY benefit I am receiving or they are more concern on the benefits of my 2 minor kids? The benefits we are receiving are actually not even enough to cover all the bills, I always ended up loaning thru payday loans. I infact, jobless and struggling to find a job for a while. Will they require ALL the bank statements since 2006 - current year?

    Thanks so much.

I doubt you are receiving SSI, Supplemental Security Income, which is a welfare program for disabled adults and disabled children.

You are probably receiving Social Security Survivor benefits from your deceased husband. Social Security is not a welfare program and for survivor benefits, you have to meet certain age and relationship rules, but no disability rules, unless you are a widow over age 50.

If you and your children are receving Social Security Survivor benefits and not SSI like you state, you will be occasionally asked to complete a simple form about how you spent the money. You should have an idea of how much of the money for the children goes to household expenses and how much goes to personal expenses. You generally don't have to supply detailed records, as long as your answers make sense.

You should probably go to your local office or the ssa web site (socialsecurity.gov) and obtain brochures or read material on your duties as representative payee. Then ask questions.

Your personal survivor benefits last until the youngest child is age 16 or when you start earning over the exempt amount from your job. Your children's benefits last until they turn age 18 unless they are still in high school on their 18th birthday. Then, benefits last until age 19 or high school graduation, whichever comes first.

You can reapply for reduced benefits as a widow at age 60 if you remain unmarried. You can reapply for reduced benefits at age 50 if you remain unmarried and are disabled. Or you can reapply at full retirement age (somewhere before age 68) for unreduced benefits.

hello, yes I guess I was wrong when I thought from day 1 that I was receiving SSI. I am receiving Soc Sec Survivor Benefit cuz my husband died. I was told before by one of the Rep of SS where I went personally to SSA office that MY benefit will end when my youngest daughter reach the age of 16 but HER benefit will still be continuous till she reach the age of 18....Thanks so much for explaining this to me in detailed. I am really no understanding of SS benefits......

I guess you were referring to this Representative Payee Form? I normally receive that once a year and I normally just put exactly the same total amount and "0" if there is any saved money left at all...cuz there was really none...again, like I said, it was not even enough and ended up thru pay day loan....cuz I read some post here that he was asked to come personally to SSA office for an interview and bring with him his tax returns and bank statements and he mentioned that it is a standard procedure from SS. Is this applicable only to those who are receiving SSI and not the survivor benefit?

    Thanks again.

SSI is public assistance. SSI recipients have to periodically prove that they still meet the low income and limited resource criteria and that have reported all events that can determine the amount of their SSI checks.

You gotta figure out a way of the payday loan habit you are in. It is just costing you money. One time I suggested that a person borrow $10 or $20less from the payday loan place each month until the amount was reduced to zero.

You gotta kick this habit. Wean yourself off of it slowly if that is what it takes.
