    Default Accommodating Parents of Children

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: PA

Would having children and dealing with the trials and tribulations of being a parent; be grounds for discrimmination in the work place? I am the only person in my area that has children. If I have to leave because one was in a car accident, I am told no. If I have to take off to take one to the doctor's, I am told NO. I have the accrued time available. Everyone else in the company never has a problem with changing their work schedule to accomadate their children or even a sick family member. Except my boss (who has no kids and is mad at the world cause her husband left her) and gives me some lame excuse that I can change my schedule temporarily or I can not leave or anything like that. I have a co-worker is has a dog...no kids and when the dog is sick, she is allowed to leave.

In one place you say that you are the only one with children, and in another place you say that other people are allowed to leave for issues related to their children. Both statements cannot be right. Which is it?

Momm, I can't find anything in the PA laws on familial status as you suggest:

You can search through or ask.

i am sorry i wrote too fast and did not proof read my post. in my area, my boss and 8 co-workers and no one has kids between the 9 of us except me. throughout the company in other areas (with different bosses) there are people that have children and are given better treatment than me. for example, one person (not in my area) had to leave because their kid was sick. was told by their boss it was ok. i ask to leave cause kid blacked out behind the wheel and was in a car accident that totaled their car. i was told i was not permitted to leave. another situation is that another person was allowed to alter their work schedule and come in late daily cause spouse was ill. well i am in a similar situation where my child is dying from cancer. my boss says i can not alter my schedule for 1 day a month. my boss is a b**** and has a bug up her a**. i have reported her to HR and they sweep it under the rug. (they have received numerous complaints on the way this boss treats individuals) i can not understand how a company can let some people do things and then let someone take the power they have to their head. i am sorry, just venting with frustration.

I understand your frustration. I have been in the work force going on 40 years and I have witnessed things you would not believe.

I wish I had some constructive advice, but if the top dog won't listen to you, there is no place to turn to for support but friends, finacial and emotional.

    Stay strong.

Different departments are allowed to have different rules. Just because parents in other areas are allowed to take time off for child-related reasons does not mean that you must be.
