In 1989, I was 24, married to an American lady and had legal residence card. A year later I purchased a grocery store. Within two to four weeks, the store was burned while my nephew was inside; he was found dead. The ATF officers came and placed a sign that says "Arson, cash rewards for any information". Two weeks later I was arrested, and plead not guilty to an indictment of three charges: conspiracy to commit mail fraud and arson!
I had no money left to hire an attorney, but the court appointed one free of charge. To make the story short, the lawyer was, in essence, not effective. I was found guilty of all charges and was sentenced to serve 10 years.
Within the third year of my imprisonment, my wife filed for divorce. Thereafter, I was diagnosed with clinical depression and received professional treatment. Although I was a college drop-out, I attended school, passed the GED, enrolled college again and obtained an Associate in Science. Later on, I was told that I have been selected by the prison administration as a model inmate. My family and friends gathered some money and filed an appeal through the best arson attorney known in the US, but was affirmed.
One year before the end of my sentence, my parents were found murdered in their home (in the country of Jordan). Thereafter, I was sent to an immigration court, where I requested from the lady Judge to give up my right to fight the deportation process and in October 2000 went back to my homeland to start my life all over again.
I attended college again and obtained a BA with honor, and received unconditional master's admission from the highest, prestigious university in the UK.
Now I am preparing myself to complete my postgraduate studies and wonder if I can visit my American brother and sister who live there. Any suggestions?
