We have already filed Chapter 7 and completed our hearing, and we have sent reaffirmation papers on our first mortgage. The attorney says that we should keep paying second, but not reaffirm so that if we do have to surrender the house sometime the second mortgage lender cannot go after a deficiency balance if there is one. They say they have never had the second lender take any action. Along with the fact that I think it leaves us open to action, even if unlikely, I am also concerned with how this will affect my credit. Since I intend to pay it, I would hope that it would help to re-establish credit eventually.
It sounds like to me that you found yourself one GOOD attorney. He/she was worth whatever you paid him/her.

Once your bankruptcy is discharged and it appears on your credit report as discharged. Apply for a credit card with this bank. They will issue you an unsecured card directly after a chapter 7
