My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: California
My mother passed away in June of 2008. We lived together in an apartment. My name was on the lease with my mother. After her death, I signed a 6 month lease and when I did I was never told that there was an outstanding utility bill. Now, the apartment management company is telling me that I owe $500 in utility bills. The utility bill is in my mother's name and not my name.
Am I still responsible for these utility bills under my mother's name? I was listed on the rental agreement, but the apartment complex is telling me that these bills are 2 years old? They are telling me that I will be evicted if I don't pay these utility bills.
