Default Assaulted With a Deadly Weapon and Nearly Killed

My question involves criminal law for the state of: california

about 6 years ago i was assaulted by a 'friend' with a deadly weapon. We were at a house he was staying at, and we were both pretty drunk. That night he took a crow bar and he must of hit me over 6 times aiming for the head. I have several lacerations on my head exposing my cranium. Several puncture wounds on the back and my clavicle bone was broken, I could not defend myself because this was a totally unprovoked attacked and he caught me by surprise, that and i was pretty inebriated. What kind of 'friends' does this? I guess he wasnt a friend after all.

of course i had to report the crime; but the outcome was nothing. justice did not previal. the officer told me that it was his word against mine, even though he has NO injuries. The assailant simply told the officer that it was "self-defense"

That was six years ago; my wounds back then are ugly scars now that reminds me daily of what happened to me that night, every time i look in the mirror.

My question is, is there anything i can do now? I left it alone for a few years because i did not have any money to pursue the guy via a civil case. I am bothered by this every day and is constantly on my mind. the guy still calls me every now and then to gloat about the incident. is there anything i can do?

You can consult legal counsel regarding a civil suit, but absent some creative legal maneuvering, the statue of limitations even for a civil action has long passed.
