    Default Expired Student Visa Married to U.S Citizen - How to Get Citizenship

    i came to the us in 1965 with student visa graduated with a doctors degree, been in private practice 35 years .....married a us citizen thirty three years ago ,,three children ,,i am still married and still here ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,from canada originally,,,,,need to get legal status and a visa .....i have a canadian visa but expired a few ,,perhaps 5 years ago not renewed ,,,,,what to do .........i have many hundreds of patients who depend on me for care ,i would also like to consider the option of dual citizenship possibilities ,,,,what steps do i take ,,thanks for your help i live in illinois

    Wait...you've been in the US, married to a US citizen, and you've been working without a green card or employment authorization? For 35 years??

    If it were just a matter of your getting legal after being married all these years, you'd only have some paperwork, fees and wiseass immigration officials to contend with.

    Since you've been working all these years, you've got some trouble you're going to have to get ironed out. Get yourself to a good immigration attorney in your area as soon as you can manage.

    i have a proper social security and paid taxes correctly if these are the issues you refer to ,,,,,,,so is the answer still the same or different thanks,

    Lots of people have SSNs and pay taxes, yet are still working illegally.

    If you've been working without authorization - and it sounds like you have been - you're going to have a lot of talking to the authorities to do, and you really should not be doing that without an attorney.
