I am a 17 year old living in PA. I turn 18 in three months. I live at home and I have made over 10,000 dollars in the last year. This was taxed, I work at Wendy's. My mother works less than I do and I'm pretty sure that I have made more than she has in the last year, yet she's still threatening to claim me, and I'm afraid I will have to pay as a result, since I made so much. Is this true? I live at home but she doesn't provide much for me at all, I live off my own income but I have no real way of proving this. I don't have a good relationship with her and she's trying to "stick it to me". Can she do this, even though I have made more than she has and she doesn't support me? Thanks.
Maybe...maybe not. If your mother makes less than you then how is she paying for housing, utilities, food, medical insurance etc? Its not as simple as who makes the most money.

Also, while the tax ramifications may be a few hundred dollars on your return, it might be several thousand on your mothers.
