    Angry Felony Battery Situation

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

Long story short, two of my friends and I were involved in a fight after leaving a bar (only one friend fought really). I choked someone in the process of pulling him off my friend and we tried to get away. A guy wanted to fight still and my friend turned to face him and knocked him unconscious. Again we tried to leave and were attacked. I was hit in the face from behind and knocked down. I was a bloody mess but still conscious. My other friend didn't do anything except pull people off. After the dust had settled, my friends and I were all arrested for felony battery (1/1 243(D) PC) because the guy had to go to the hospital.

First of all I think its ridiculous that we were arrested and are in this situation, but what am I looking at here? How serious is this?

Are my friends and I in any position to press charges ourselves? or sue for money spent on bail?

The police officers never took our statements and I never received any medical attention, even after we arrived at the Sheriff's department. Does that mean anything to our case?

If anyone has any information that could help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
