Default Senior Citizen and Credit Card Debt

My question is regarding collection proceedings for the state of: Iowa
My father-in-law is 76 years old and still working full time. Due to some past medical issues he has about 15,000 in credit card debt which he is unable to pay. What are the consequences if he would just quit paying on the debt. I know that it would wreak his credit rating, but what else?

If he quits paying, they can get a judgment against him & seize all non-exempts assets/income of his that his state allows.
