Default Becoming a Police Officer With HYTA on Record

My question involves a background check in the State of: Michigan

Aaron, you were very helpful with a question I had regarding HYTA in a past thread and was hoping that you could provide some more help. I have completed my associates degree and I'm really interested in moving to Iowa with my brother and would like to become a police officer.

I qualified for HYTA status about 11 years ago and haven't ran into any trouble since. In your experience, what are my chances? Naturally, a felony is an automatic disqualifier in Iowa for consideration for the job. Having qualified for HYTA, I have never been 'convicted' of a felony, but police agencies will be able to see it on my record still. My fear is that, because they are in Iowa, they will most likely not be familiar with HYTA and view it as some sort of an expungement - an automatic disqualifier as well.

Any insight on the matter is very much appreciated (again).

You're going to have to ask each police department where you wish to apply. There's not a "one size fits all" rule as to whether any particular department would exclude you from consideration based upon your deferral.

HYTA is a form of expungement.

Thanks for the response Mr. Knowitall. I was led to believe that an expungement was used to get a felony conviction off your record. Under HYTA, you are never convicted of anything until you break the terms of your sentence; probation in my case. If I were to violate my probation, then I would automatically be found guilty of the crime committed.

The fact that there is such misconception about HYTA in other states is definitely what worries me about my chances. I guess we'll see...
