    Default Noise Violations

I read the thread about loud music and it got me to thinking about how goofy noise laws are.

You cannot play a stereo {home or car} louder than the law says you can, or within a certain time range. I can see that, after all who wants to be awakened at 3am because some idiot wants to here the bump, boom, bump of rap, right??

But, why are autos and motorcycles exhaust systems exempt from that?? I have heard Hardely Ablesons long before they ever pass by me and those kids with those bumble bee exhaust cans are obnoxious. Why aren't these people getting cited for excessive noise??

Do you feel that they are to be held to the same standards as someone wanting to rock out with barreling down the road? If you did get a noise violation ticket, could equality be considered a viable defense?

On motorcycles, there is a decal near the exhuast stating that the federal noise limit is 86db and it is against federal law to alter the exhaust? Yet, I can not think of a single case of this ever being brought up. Anyone know why??

Hmmm... often wondered that myself. Myabe, just maybe, its because one can easily alter a steros volume, but cannot legaly tamper with a motorcycles exaust?

I can think of lots of instances where noisy motorcycles get brought up. My officers wrote at least two tickets for it tonight, that I can remember (and one to a Mustang driver with "switched" exhaust - don't know how the officer caught that, but kuddos - the kid probably thought the officer was too stupid to check).

Guess it all depends on where you live. I can't speak for other agencies, but where I work such "easy" fish-in-a-barrel tickets make for great probable cause for a stop - which can lead to all sorts of nifty things like warrants, DUI and other officer-initiated arrests. :::::shrug:::::

As with all things in public safety, it's the squeeky wheel that gets the grease - and we get lots of noise complaints which may explain our higher than typical (is there a "typical") level of enforcement.

must be where you guys are from. In my area, the cities have been enacting their own noise level ordinances and enforcing them. Like Aardvark says; makes for an easy reason for contact where who knows what will be found.

Same for where I'm from. The "thunk-tha-tha-thunk" just doesn't cut it, not even while parked in your own driveway. My neighbor's son received a warning (excessive noise) yesterday while sitting in his driveway, testing out his new pre-amp and speakers he got for Xmas.

In all the places I've lived, I've never heard of anyone getting a noise violation except for car stereos. Where I am now, I heard a motorcycle, but didn't see it for the longest time. When it finally did get to me, it was no surprise to see it was a Harley. And, while Harley riders aren't the only ones installing the loudest of pipes, it is primarly them that are obnoxiously loud.

Does anyone know of someone charged with the federal law pertaining to exhaust alterations?

Place where I live police say some motorcycle exhaust systems are illegal, though specific statistics on how often motorcycle riders get cited for them were not available.
