My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: MI

A long story short after my husbands loss of job and a brain surgery resulting in him unable to work we were unable to pay our credit card debts. We went through American Debt Foundation and we have been putting money into an account to pay off these debts since May 2008. I believe last payment we made was in March 2008 to Discover.

Today I received a summons and complaint from Discover giving me 21 days to file a written answer with the court. I am not sure what I am supposed to do. We tried to work with Discover at the time I knew we couldn't continue the payments. They would not lower interest which I called for 3 months and requested. By going into debt consolidation we are instructed to not talk to creditors or it voids our agreement with them. While they have been negotiating with WAMU and we have come close to a settlement Discover will not talk with them. Where do I go from here? I am not denying the debt I am just not in a position to pay with 2 kids, being disabled myself with a genetic heart condition and my husbands health issues. Can they garnish SSD?? What do I do???
