    Question Michigan Eviction

My question involves an eviction in the state of: Michigan
My husband left me a few mths ago with 3 snall children, I just went through cervical cancer treatment and are unable to work due to other medical condtions that require me to take 8 medications daily, the rent hasnt been paid in 4 mths now, I did have dept. of human services help with the utilities and they gave me a bridge card for food, I just recieved a judgement from the landlord and went to court last week, the judge ordered me out be Jan.2nd, I have nowhere to go and I need a little more time to have DHS help me try and get an apartment, The landlord tells me that If im not out then on Jan2nd a Baliff will come take everything from the home and place it outside and padlock the house. I never actually recieved anything that says notice to evict so can I get some more time in order to find resources and agencies to help me? I cant be out be Jan2nd. Can I appeal this decision and get some more time? I got the paper served for non payment of rent then the judgement paper, went to court, I cant believe they give me only 10 days to move out. Is there a step after the judgement and the court saying 10 days? If I dont leave be Jan2nd will a baliff come here or will the landlord then have to take further steps? I have no idea about all this.

The unfortunate legal truth is that none of these issues are the landlord's issues. The court said 10 days, and the sheriff's office will uphold 10 days - they'll show up and start putting stuff out at the curb. That only gives you 6 days, with holidays in there where many helpful offices will be closed, to start making other arrangements.

Many things that might ultimately assist you will be too slow to help at this point (applying for social security disability, going to court to get child support or get it enforced, etc.) - but things like homeless shelters, church programs, the United Way, Goodwill, and other organizations can often provide relief at a much more immediate pace, even if it's just for the short term until more stable arrangements can be made. You can get some good tips from the Goodwill of N. Michigan's site at

    http://www.goodwillnmi.org/GoodwillI...ntentSetID=738

which provides a good checklist of things to do and where to get help if you anticipate being homeless.

    Best of luck...hang in there.
