    Default What is Considered Neglect

My question involves child abuse or neglect in the State of: Michigan.

Just curious if things like a dirty house constitutes as neglect for CPS to take a child? I know someone whose house is extremely cluttered and on the dirty side, like dusty and carpet that should be vacuumed more often. There is no smell from animals messing in the house, and the children are always clean and well dressed. This person was told by someone at work that they heard that a co-worker that didn't like them was going to turn them into CPS. So can you get your kids taken away for a dirty house?

Not unless it's SO bad that it's considered a health hazzard. Dirty carpet and general clutter isn't going to come close. CPS is looking for things like properly refridgerated foods, properly sanitized food service items (plates, silverware, pots & pans), absence of things like flies, roaches, and rodents, no human or animal waste laying around or accessible to the children (ie dirty diapers left laying around). If the "clutter" is so awful that it points to mental illness, they MIGHT work to get a mental health evaluation of the caretaker(s), but that only happens in the most extreme circumstances. In other words, CPS isn't going to even blink at carpets that should be vacuumed more often.
