Post Shoplifting in Illinois at Sports Authority

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois. St.Clair County.

I was caught shoplifting today for stealing a beanie and face warmer which added up to a value of $42. I filled out some forms for the people at Sports Authority stating that I would never go to one again. The cops came and I was sent to the police station where I was fingerprinted and my information was taken. I am 20 years old and my record is clean..this is my first offense, other than a non-moving traffic violation. I was given a tickets that states that I must go to court later in January. I was released without having to pay for bail or any fines, I just received a ticket stating I would have to go court. I am not sure what to expect but I will try to find any free consultation available by a lawyer. I am very afraid that this will go on my permanent record and that it will hinder me for the rest of my life. What kind of sentencing might I be given? I would like some general information for my type of situation. Please help.

    Thank you

Without the help of an attorney, it very well might.

Retain counsel to help you sort out your options. You may be eligible for a diversion program, which would consist of fines, restitution and shoplifting prevention classes, which may help you keep the charge off your record, provided you keep your nose clean.

If you can't afford private counsel, show up for court, plead Not Guilty, and ask for a Public Defender.

I am 20 also and got caught shoplifting $34 a month ago. Since I am in college, what I did was searched to see if the university provided legal advice. I was able to find out there was a campus attorney so I scheduled an appointment with him. He called the state's attorney office and was able to find out if I was eligible for a deferred prosecution program, which I was. Even if I didn't go to the attorney I still received a letter in the mail from the state's attorney saying I was eligible since my record had been clean. It is possible you could also be eligible, however seek legal advice so they can provide you with the most information and outcomes possible. The campus attorney provided me with the worst outcome for me and was very helpful.

So I got in the program (costing $350) which consisted of taking a longgg test on retail theft and expungement. I passed and that meant it wouldn't go on my record or have to appear in court. However, my arrest is still on my record, which I am seeking to get expunged. Hope my situation can help you!
