Default Is Becoming a Fire Fighter with a Felony and DUI Possible

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Michigan

I think I'd really like being a fire fighter. The problem is when I was 17 years old I made some really bad decisions. I was convicted of attempted armed robbery and breaking and entering. It sounds a lot worse than what actually happened but I took part and pled guilty and had to face the consequences. That was over 10 years ago and I have changed a lot and grew up since then. Does a felony record automatically disqualify me for this profession. One more thing, I also have 2 drunk driving tickets. The last one was 2 years ago and I have not had one drink in over a year and a half. Just thought I'd add that in because I am sure that could be a big factor also. Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, with a felony conviction and two DUI convictions, chances are good that you will not be hired as a firefighter nor for any other government related job.

Agree, a felony and DUI's can have an effect on your application for becoming a firefighter in most (if not all) states. (though some states just consider DUI's that were within the last 3 years). However, a felony hx & 2 DUI's does not make your chances good.

Should I not even bother to try?

I would never tell anyone not to try - it might depend on the fire dept. but it doesn't look good.

You might call the fire dept. application center in your area & ask what they would do with a history such as yours.

Don't ever let any of these people discourage you. The majority of criminal background checks only go back 7 to 10 years. Forget the DUI's. If you do not want to risk not mentioning the felonies, then ask to sit down with the interviewer, and tell him or her what happened. I am convinced that they will overlook it since you were so young, and especially because you have gone so long without being in serious trouble. Stick with your dreams bro and good luck!
