My question involves criminal law for the state of: Ontario (Canada)
Hey,
The other day when I left a bar I was at the scene of a fight that broke out, but I was not involved. My bf was, minorly (got his glasses knocked off, that was about it). The cops pulled up while I was standing nearby (but clearly not engaged in the fight), and seeing as my bf was at the scene, I went over to them in case they thought he was more involved than he was. The cops took our ID and wrote up some details about our ID (and I could have sworn them saying something like 'This will save us having to write you up' but I could be mistaken? there was about 20 people around and sirens going) in their notepad, and told us to take a cab home, or we could be charged with public intoxication (I wasn't acting intoxicated/was polite, but I sure as heck was not about to argue with the police). They didn't hand me a ticket or summons or anything, but why did they write down my ID details? Are they going to try to mail me a fine or summon me to court, or is that just standard procedure? I got into the cab and left without any further questioning from them.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I have never been in any trouble in my life, not even a speeding ticket, so I have no idea and that's worrying. It was a frightening and disorienting experience to say the least, the fight looked pretty serious.
Staying away from bars from now on that's for sure!
