Default Changing My Own Name on My Birth Certificate

My question involves name change laws in the State of: California birth certificate, currently residing in Utah

Note:names used are for illustration purposes only, and are not real names. I was born in California as E. Brown. My father chose to use his step-father's surname, Brown, until he was in his mid-thirties (although his name was never legally changed). By the time I was three years old, our whole family reverted back to the use of my biological grandfather's name, Jones--so Jones was my maiden name all growing up until I got married, at which point I switched my name to Williams.

I was able to get a Social Security card and my marriage license in my maiden name, Jones. However, it wasn't until my 5th child that the birth certificate form asked me to list "mother's name on birth certificate" (rather than just listing "mother's maiden name"). So now my youngest child's birth certificate lists "E. Brown" as his mother--even though I have never knowingly gone by that name. I would like to change my name on my birth certificate in order to change the "mother's name" on his birth certificate, as well as to hopefully eliminate confusion for generations going forward .

So the questions are: Is it possible to change my name on my birth certificate without changing my name now? I do not need to change my current name, as I happily go by my married name--I just hope to be able to standardize all my kids' birth certificates and make it less confusing for genealogical purposes. Is this something that I can do remotely and on my own, or do I need to hire an attorney?

In the state of California, you may not change the name on your birth certificate without a court order.

    Hi LawResearcherMissy,

Thanks for your reply. So does this mean I am out of luck, or can I get a court order to do this? Under what circumstances can I get a court order? How would one go about doing it?

    Thanks for your help.
