My question involves criminal law for the state of: CANADA, British Columbia
I work at at a Walgreens type of store and tonight I stupidly stole some beauty product items and took a whole bunch of samples that I wasn't supposed to. When my shift ended I proceeded to walk out the door with my stolen things as well as the manager I was working with that night who was walking out at the same time and the alarm went off. When me and and the manager started to sort through my purse for the receipt I told her that I must have accidentally thrown out the receipt or that it was somewhere in my car, etc. She saw receipts for many other things in my purse so I don't know if she thought that I was lying or telling the truth because it obviously shows that I have the money to have bought things in the past. I also bought a few items earlier that night in the store that were not cheap and my manager rung me through as well so I think those were contributing factors why she told me I could find the receipt and return. Another co-worker was also saying that they could go through the till records for proof that I paid as well and obviously it will show that I didn't and when she asked when I purchased them I said earlier that night so she will know who was working then and that person obviously never rung me through so I don't know if she will inquire into both of these things tomorrow because I am supposed to work with her again tomorrow as well as the person I said told me I could take all the samples... She told me that I would have to come back with the receipt to get the products and that I would have to leave them at the store tonight and I told her that someone else told me I could take all those samples so another co-worker of mine will get in trouble for that but she will probably tell the manager that I never said that so the manager will then think I am a liar. Now, I don't know if she was suspicious of me or not but should I return to work and make up some excuse as to why I don't have the receipt or just not return to that workplace at all? When I left that night without going back in with my "receipt" do you think that set off alarm bells for her? Can they proceed with charges if they somehow found out I did steal it even if I have quit the job? Will they come to where I live and arrest me because obviously they have my address and my contact information. What should I do? I can't beleive I even did this, I feel so stupid, I have also stolen other stuff from this store without being caught so I am wondering if they will find out about that somehow.... I know I can make up a million excuses but the bottom line is I shouldn't of done any of it. Can someone please give me advice as to what they will and cannot do? Should I go to work and pretend I lost the receipt in hopes that they won't figure out I stole the items or not return to the workplace? Can they pursue me for anything either way? I just feel so embarassed, I will never do this again. Beauty products are not worth it.
