Default Leaving the Country While Pending a Court Decision on the Case

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

My friend was found guilty of embezzlement and will start his three year probation on March 2009. He wants to go out of the country before his probation starts in March and return before his court date on March. My questions are: Can he do this since his probation has not started yet? Does he need to ask for a permission from the probation officer? and could he be arrested if he tries to leave the country without the permission? I am very confused and don't know if he should leave the country or not.

Before he does anything like this, he should definitely talk to his probation officer.
