My wife is from Costa Rica and we were paying for the mortgage of her mother's house. The house is in her mother's name, but the mortgage is in my wife's name. We can no longer make the payments and now we're worried the foreclosure could effect her legal status here. Can they deport her for credit default from her native country? The loan is with a Costa Rican Bank and has never showed on our credit here. Will this effect our credit if there's a default?
Her status is a permanent resident alien. She would like to apply for citizenship next year.
Thanks,
