    Unhappy Retail Theft Concerns

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois

I am 20 years old and was arrested for a misdemeanor retail theft in Illinois. The item was 34 dollars. I am really concerned about what I should expect. I clearly made a horrible choice and had a clean record prior. I don't know what I am going to do because it is that time in my life to look for a career and now this is something that I have to talk about before I can get hired. What could happen when I go before the judge and should I get a lawyer? I know I am all over the place with this, but every thing I have planned out for my life seems to be falling away.

well since it was only $34 it would be a misdemeanor. punishment wont be too harsh but your record will be blemished. employers who run background checks would definitely be concerned. look for a lawyer who offers a free telephone consultation and ask if there is anyway you can prevent this incident from being on your record.

Yes, hire an attorney if you can afford one. If not, plead not guilty at your arraignment and request that a PD be appointed you.

Chances are you will qualify for deferred sentence; you complete all provisions of your sentence (community service, fines and fees, probation, etc.) and the record of this offense will be erased.

So say I plead not guilty, I get a new court date then does that mean it is possible for people from the store to show up at the next one? I shoplifted from Von Maur if it makes any difference. I'm just concerned because it was clear that they had me with this offense so I admitted to shoplifting the shirt.

if you cant afford a lawyer, just go to court on ur courtdate and ask them to appoint you one. youll get interviewed and then you will have another court date when you will come back with ur public defender. if anything you can always appeal to circuit.
