    Default Turning 18, Leaving Home

My question involves emancipation laws for the State of: Ohio

I am a coach and have a athlete who is turning 18 in a few weeks. Her parents are deceased and she is collected SSI (or her guardians are) currently. She will not graduate until June. My family has offered her a place to stay, food and help her fill out financial aid and try to help her find a college. My concerns: Now that she is 18 she will get SSI until graduation, which my father will begin banking for her, my concern is health care. Once she is 18 and moves out of her guardians does she lose health care? Is there something she can apply for? We want to help this girl because we feel her guardians are going to make her move once she turns 18 and she will have no where else to go, but we are concerned about maintaining Health care for her. Also, while still getting SSI do we have to prove she is paying rent, etc. or how does that work so she can at least get those benefits until graduation? We dont' want her to be somewhere unsafe.

If you are a coach, why is your father doing the banking?

My mother and father are opening their home to her. My mother works at the high school and they are offering her the place to stay. My husband and I have two small children and don't have room to take her in, so my parents and my sister have opened their home to her.

We don't know anything about her disability, although apparently it's severe enought that even as an adult she needs somebody else to handle her finances for her? She should consider discussing her situation with somebody at the Social Security Administration.

If she is presently insured and her coverage lapses, she should be able to continue her insurance coverage through COBRA, although that can be expensive. If she enrolls in college, there may be a group plan available to her through her college. We don't know enough about her disability or circumstances; she may be Medicaid eligible.

I don't think the OP is saying that she's disabled, shes on SSI bc her parents are deceased.

If she's considering a college in Ohio, it will be required that she get insurance thru the school if she has none available to her. The good news is, I don't know of any school in Ohio that doesn't offer a plan.

Get her an appointment with the SSA soon or try and research the website at SSA.gov
