Default Overpayment of Social Security Benefits

    Georgia...

I received a letter from SS stating they needed to discuss something with me. It has to do with an overpayment, or so I am assuming.

Prior to going back to work, I notified SS. I told them where I was working. I was asked if they could keep in contact with my employer regarding my status of employment. I gave them permission to do so. After nine months, I was still receiving benefits, and did contact SS to tell them I was past the nine month trial period. The benefits continued, even with phone calls.

I have called SS regarding the letter that was sent to me, and found, they had my old address and a bad zip code. How I received the letter I did, I don't know because even the address on the letter was wrong...wasn't even my old address (street name and number were correct but the apartment number was incorrect). I asked that someone please call me and I have yet to hear from anyone. I not only gave them my home number, but also my cell number.

I can't afford to pay back. They had permission to contact my employer at any time as I had been asked if they could and I said yes. I contacted them after the nine month trial period yet they still continued to pay.

Please, any help or information as to what I can do is greatly appreciated.

    Default Social Security Overpayment

You don't know what the contact is about, although you apparently have cause to believe you received benefits to which you weren't entitled. Unfortunately, until you figure out what exactly the inquiry is about, absent a very lucky guess it is impossible to formulate a meaningful response.

They were paying me even though I was gainfully employed. I notified them of this when it continued. So, going on that assumption, can you offer any advice?

Also, I've left messages for them to call me either at home or my cell, and that hasn't happened either.

I do appreciate your help very much.

    Default Overpayment

If in fact this is a request to recover an alleged overpayment you need to submit to Social Security a "Request for Reconsideration" as well as a Request for a Waiver. Both of these forms are in PDF format on the social security website under forms. These must be submitted within 60 days of the receipt of the overpayment request. I suggest sending these forms to your local social security office and do so by way of certified mail return receipt request. You will then have proof of your submission. Also, keep a copy of the forms you complete for your records.

Thank you for your reply. I will find the forms, print them, complete them and mail them RRR.
