Default Self Defense and the Law

I was wondering if anyone might be able to tell me as to what the laws are relating to self defense and excessive use of force both on a Federal level and on the state level.

I live in the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico and lately I have seen an increase in the levels of crime in relation to both personal and property related crime and I am wondering as to exactly what my rights are within the law to protect both myself and my property as it is really starting to scare me.

I have thought about buying a gun and I am still thinking about that, but I am also seriously looking at the martial arts as well.

Ever since I moved to New Mexico in 2006 I have had nothing but problems in which people have tried to deceive me both online and in person, plus I have had people physically threaten me and I have had people vandalize my car on several occasions.

In the first incident my back window was broken out and my tool boxes that I had in the back of my car were stolen in March of 2007. In Feburary 2008 my car was again vandlized while I was at home reading in which someone had broken all of the windows on my car and had slashed all of my tires and in September 2008 my car was again vandalized while it was sitting at my mothers house on the opposite end of town and while I was away from it for a few hours helping my aunt move. In that incident someone had slashed my tires.

I personally am getting sick and tired of people lying to me and in people trying to either physically assault me, steal from me, or to vandalize my car and as a result I am getting to be very security conscious and am currently looking for ways in which to protect both myself and my property legally so that I can feel more safe and secure.

I would appreciate it if someone can help me to understand the laws relating to self defense and if anyone might happen to have some ideas as to what steps that I can take to protect myself without getting into trouble with the law, then I would greatly appreciate it.

What you're gonna suddenly learn martial arts and go around like Bruce Lee? I mean if you were already a master that would be one thing but a decent street-fighter can go head to head with a decent martial artist (street fighting is martial arts)
That stuff about regestering your hands as lethal weapons or snatching someones eys out and showing them to the person before they go blind (now that's fast) is just TV. Although boxer's can get in trouble. Anything you do in self defense, even killing, is justifiable depending on the threat.

A gun is just "too much" and novices tend to panic and empty the clip in one shot and if they miss - well figure the rest out. Buy a personal tazer or pepper spray and watch how you interact with people because I seldom have problems even in ghettos like Hobbs.

I'm not looking to go around and to try to be something that I am not. All that I am trying to do is to protect myself as I am getting sick and tired of being a victim because someone else has issues that they need to be dealing with.

Just because someone else has problems of some sort does not give them the right to attack me me any way and I am getting sick and tired of other people's crap and I am trying to do my best to stand up for myself by protecting myself both physically and otherwise. Sitting around letting other people attack me and letting myself be their victim just does not cut it and I seriously doubt that you or anyone else here would allow yourselves to be a victim of any sort.

Although I don't know you personally I am guessing that you probably have enough guts to fight back when someone either attacks you out right or when they persecute you for no reason at all just because they have for some reason either consciously decided that they are going to be A*holes or because they have some other problem that is bothering them whether it be psychological or otherwise.

Assertion and self defense are in my book the only option against that kind of stuff and I am looking to get better at it so that I can go on and enjoy a more peaceful and productive life by as much as I possibly can.

I personally would rather be a love than a fighter any day of the weak, but whether I like it or not sometimes you have to fight because other people won't give you the option of walking away. It's kind of like that song that Kenny Roger's once sang called 'The Coward of the county'.

I personally am not a coward in any sense of the word, but given the choice I would rather walk away from a fight than to actually fight, but if provoked then you can better believe that I will fight and that I will use anything and everything at my disposal to end the fight in my favor.

The only thing that I really want to do is to just go on and do things like making money, getting myself out of debt, and in playing the dating game until I do find the right woman and then when I do find the right woman for me I would like to be able to settle down, get married and have some kids.

I also would like to go back to school and further my education, while at the same time starting some businesses to help offset many of the expenses associated with school and to give me the money to really go out and enjoy both myself and my life.
