You did not specify your state. Some states do not provide you a right to resist the police even if you are being arrested unlawfully. To my knowledge they all permit you to defend yourself from excessive force but it would be incumbent upon YOU to show that the force was excessive ... and, you would likely get hurt even worse in the course of defending yourself.
Why do you think the police might just suddenly decide to start "beating" you?

Isn't "I was defending my brother against police brutality" the defense Mumia Abu Jamal raised at his murder trial? He's still on death row, as I recall. Getting into a swearing contest with the police, as you're charged with various offenses such as assault on an officer and resisting arrest, about who swung the first unnecessary blow? That's a dangerous game.
