A couple of days before Christmas my pre-teen daughter and her friend were caught shoplifting at Macy's in Massachusetts. It was their first (and last) offense. They were brought into the security office and we were called. The police did not arrest her, but it goes on her record until she is 17. The girls were banned from the mall premises and EVERY Macy's (parking lots included) for two years, have to go to court for a hearing next month, and we were civilly sued for $500.
According to Mass law a retailer can demand $50-$500. Macy's pressured us to pay the $500 right then in there. We are waiting to see what happens at court before we tackle the civil suit. Anyone face this?
